THE MOMENT
You told yourself you were going to track your spending this month. You really meant it. You downloaded an app in January. You entered three transactions. Then life happened, and now it is three weeks later and you have no idea where your money actually went.
THE FIX: Auto-Categorizing Your Spending in 20 Minutes
Here is a 20-minute setup that tracks every dollar you spend — automatically, without you logging a single transaction manually.
The tool is called Copilot (iPhone) or YNAB (iPhone and Android). Both connect directly to your bank accounts and credit cards and pull in every transaction the moment it posts. They categorize spending automatically — groceries, gas, dining, subscriptions — using their own logic, which you can adjust once and it learns your habits over time.
Here is how to get it running:
Download Copilot from the App Store (iPhone only, $13/month or $100/year) or YNAB from the App Store or Google Play ($15/month or $99/year). Both have free trials — start there.
Open the app and tap Add Account. You will connect your bank using a secure service called Plaid — the same technology behind Venmo, Cash App, and most major finance apps. Search for your bank by name, log in with your normal banking credentials, and approve the connection. Your bank never gives the app your password — Plaid uses a secure token instead.
Connect every account you actually spend from: checking, savings, and every credit card. The more accounts you connect, the more complete the picture.
Let the app pull in the last 30–90 days of transactions. This takes about 2 minutes.
Spend 10 minutes reviewing the automatic categories. Most will be correct. For anything miscategorized — maybe your gym charges show up as "Entertainment" instead of "Health" — tap the transaction, change the category, and select "Always categorize this merchant as Health." The app remembers it forever.
That is the setup done.
What changes after:
Every morning, your spending from the day before is already logged, categorized, and sitting in your app waiting for you. You can check where you stand in 30 seconds instead of 30 minutes. By the end of the month, you have a complete picture of your spending without having done a single manual entry. Most people who use this consistently for one month are surprised — either relieved or genuinely shocked — by what they find.
